Lewis Hamilton praises Toto Wolff in his ability to elevate people | 20.10.22

I think it's the core group of people. There’s great communication throughout the organisation. Toto is very focused as a leader to really elevate people. I don't know any other leader that that I've worked with at least that that goes and says, ‘hey, how’re things at home?’ How can I help support you better, so you have more time with your wife or your husband or with your partner, with your kids, so that you come to work and be happier and want to commit more. That’s who Toto is.

So I think it's that, and because of that, there's a real general hunger within the team. So yeah, a combination of those. And I'd, like to think that we're going to be the ones that are competing with them and being able to beat them again, I do believe that for sure. But I really hope that Ferrari are strong in the following years. They've definitely had a difficult year but there's been some strong signs, obviously, that you've seen this year, which has been nice to see. And it's been nice to see Ferrari doing well again.

So I hope that it's more than a two-way battle next year. I hope there's at least three of us. If not, surprisingly, maybe more. Like, why can't McLaren be there? We'll see. Or even Alpine’s been doing amazing. So we'll see.

“I think I’m cool, I think I did everything I could possible do today. If I look, firstly from my perspective, I couldn’t have done anything better today, I don’t think today. I’m really proud of myself in that respect. I’m really proud of the team, the pit-stops were great, the strategy was great, we gave everything we could.

“We’re fighting against a team that is 10km/h faster on the straight and ultimately have won almost all the races so… For us to even be in the equation, I think is a huge positive. Lots of positives to take from today.”

“First of all I would like to start by saying a big thank you to my team, everyone back at the factory is working so hard and it’s been such a trying year for everyone. We came here with upgrades, they worked so hard to bring those upgrades. They [The upgrades] really had an effect we were closer today, so, really proud of every body. Sorry I couldn’t get that win, I gave it absolutely everything.

“We were in that lead and, I could see he was closing a second a lap and I couldn’t really answer to it for a while. He came from so far back from the straight, I think they’re like 10km/h faster normally on the straight anyways. And at the end of the straight my mirrors were vibrating so much I couldn’t see where he was so it was difficult to defend.”

Lewis on how much a win would mean to the team:

“I can’t put in words how much it would mean to the team, especially with everything that’s going on and everything that happened in the last race last year… Then, what’s happened this year in terms of our performance, all the news and everything… To get a win would be a huge triumph for us, hugely rewarding. What I’ll take from today is that we had good pace, I’m still here, and I know that when they build the car I will take it to the top so we just gotta keep working.”

“I wanna give a huge thank you to the crowd here, we have such an amazing crowd. This is the biggest crowd we’ve had in the whole time we’ve been here so big thank you everybody. Secondly I wanna give a big shoutout to my team, we came here with upgrades, we closed the gap a little bit. It was so so close, I did everything I could to try and stay ahead but they were just a little bit too quick today. But great strategy, great race by Red Bull and again, my condolences to the team.”

“I’m shattered [from the tough race]. The car was a handful today, it felt amazing to be in the lead, that’s something we’ve been working so hard as a team through the year and I felt so much hope. But it’s okay, we’ll hold on to that, we’ll keep pushing. We’ll try give it everything we can in these next three [races], it’ll come to us at some stage.”

lewishamilton | P2! Some tough racing out there, it wasn’t easy but we are taking away a good result. Thank you to the team for all the hard work this weekend. Strategy, pit stops, all of it was on point. This outcome is a huge boost for us all, and we are ultimately leaving with some valuable learnings for next year. Always fun to battle @sebastianvettel - let’s keep this momentum going for Mexico, see you all next week
